schap! 2016

The project ‘schap!MZAMBA2016’ is part of the Ithuba Wild Coast School same like schap!MZAMBA2014. The project is located in the Region Mzamba Mouth, nearby Port Edwards and in the South of Durban, South Africa.
The idea behind the Master plan from Architect Markus Dobmeier (Munich) for all Grades (1-9) is that each class gets its own plot and a building - a classroom with a courtyard for indoor and outdoor lectures. Aside from private spaces within each building unit the public courtyards are formed between the classes in order to have open spaces more protected from the wind.
With project schap!MZAMBA2016 there was a need to develop the master plan for Grade 5-7 and 8-9 further. Three classrooms and one multifunctional room are adjoined together on one plot that is approximately 1.5 size bigger than the plots of the realised Grades 1-4. Aside from the practical and economical reasons, last three classes are belonging to the older aged group of students. The design is planned in two building phases. Within 8 weeks a group of 22 students, together with a team of 8 local workers, finished two classrooms for Grade 5 and 6 and also the foundation for Grade 7 and the multifunctional room. The building material was chosen in a way that the other two rooms can be built only by the local team.

Technical Description

The basic material was concrete bricks which is, on the one hand the fastest material to build two classrooms in a short time and also very affordable, available and commonly used by locals.
The roof is carried by a timber construction that was developed and calculated together with the civil engineers from the CUAS. Two wooden beams are set over the classroom carrying the secondary roof construction - also done with wood.
Like with previous projects, many building elements are produced on the site. main beams, classroom doors etc. In order to maintain a sustainability of the project all the building material was ordered from local companies which was decisive fact in the design process.
