Strandbu

On Sandøya stood an old boat, battered by the elements.
The ramshackle little house was ideal for Project Strandbu. The family with ties to the island had a desire to restore the building, but with extended use. The result was Strandbu, built by fifteen architecture students during a two-week workshop in June 2014 Sandøya, with its beautiful sandy beach and fine hiking, it is a short boat ride off Bessaker Fosen. One of the goals of the project was to make the island more accessible to the public by inviting them to come ashore, using the coastal zone and explore the area.

The starting point for the design was that the building would continue to have a compatible look to the boathouse. To make the most of its 25 square meter of space, it was important to preserve as much of the height of the ceiling. Therefore, it was decided to use a sloped construction for roof purlins which
only rests on the two gable walls. The design of these was thus essential for the overall construction as they both support the roof and stiffen the building. The platform joins the terrain, stairs down to form the actual entrance of Strandbu. In front areas which are exposed towards the sea, a sheltered space was created where one can sit in peace under roof and enjoy the view.
