Khanyisani Preschool Johannesburg

The district Drieziek in the township of Orange Farm, about 40 km away from the city center of Johannesburg, is a fast growing informal settlement in the boundaries of the South African metropolis. The exclusively black inhabitants are living in the simplest dwellings with insufficient infrastructure and only a few social institutions.

For an existing kindergarten initiative in a dilapidated tin house a new kindergarten was erected in the neighborhood by a group of 35 students with their tutors of the Technical University of Munich. The massive construction offers flexible and generous interior spaces.

The roof construction responds to the climatic conditions in a special manner providing covered outdoor spaces.
