Ithuba Teacher Housing

Situated on the southern outskirts of Johannesburg, the Ithuba Skills College offers children of the neighboring township the possibility of a secondary school, where basic principles and skills of a skilled trade aside from usual subjects are being taught.

The school project was founded as a private initiative by the Austrian association Sarch and continues to develop further over the past years thanks to the support and participation of several European university groups, who keep constructing buildings and outdoor spaces together with the local people. One part of the development plan of the campus is to create adequate housing for teachers and volunteering craftsmen and integrate these structures in the campus next to classrooms and workshops.

One house for teachers has been constructed by a student group of the Technical University of Munich organized through the association Bauen für Orange Farm e.V. The building manages the changing occupancy and diverse uses in a flexible manner.

Closed courtyards generate several entrances to the individual living spaces and offer a necessary barrier to the school campus.
