DesignBuild Summer Studio 2017 - REFUGIO CAFÈ

As part of TU Berlin’s Summer University program, six students of diverse academic and professional backgrounds spent two weeks learning and working together on the course “DesignBuild - Community Spaces With Refugees.”

Topic: Design with social responsibility and the development of creative, practical and professional skills through making.

Learning Goals: The overall learning objective of this course is the education of aware decision-makers who are conscious about the urgent need to take responsibility in constructing balanced social, cultural and ecological living environments.

The students develop an idea from the design idea to the built project. An examination of the context and discussions with the clients and users form the basis for the final design. In collaboration with the users and a craftsman, the design is built and inaugerated.

Goals:

Front & Façade of the Café

• to ensure that every person that walks by the café understands a little about Refugio.
• the addition of modular furniture.
• the installation of floorboards/shutters (will help ‘close’ the alcove and create storage space)
• to install a windscreen with planter.
• to install two frames/glass cases to showcase artwork, photography, etc.
• to repaint the façade around the entrance

To Be Continued...

• poster/display cases in the façade.
• captions for the photographs currently hanging in the indoor walls of the café.
• use of interior walls as rotating exhibition space.
• painting the rest of the façade.
• bike rack.
