Planting workshop - Grange aux Moines Garden Forest
The Forest Garden project at the Grange aux Moines was carried out as part of the Atelier du Limousin, a teaching program supported by the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Val de Seine.
This forest garden was designed as a productive and collective space, capable of nourishing the students of the Atelier throughout the seasons, while also enhancing the site’s biodiversity.
The construction phase, held in January, brought together all the students in a collective planting effort, guided by a professional specialized in agroforestry. This hands-on experience offered an opportunity to understand how a nourishing ecosystem works: selecting species suited to the Limousin’s soil and climate, thinking about plant associations, reading the soil, managing water, and understanding natural cycles.
The garden’s composition combines several plant layers — fruit trees, shrubs, perennials, and climbers — arranged to foster complementarity and ensure the system’s long-term resilience.
This project fully reflects the philosophy of the Atelier du Limousin: learning by doing, reconnecting with local resources, understanding the territory’s ecological dynamics, and integrating this knowledge into today’s architectural design practices.

Technical Description
Le projet de la Forêt Jardin de la Grange aux Moines a été réalisé dans le cadre de l’Atelier du Limousin, un enseignement porté par l’École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Val-de-Seine.
Cette forêt jardin a été pensée comme un espace productif et collectif, capable de nourrir les étudiants de l’atelier au fil des saisons, tout en renforçant la biodiversité du lieu.
Le chantier, mené en janvier, a rassemblé l’ensemble des étudiants autour d’un travail de plantation collective, accompagné par une professionnelle spécialisée en agroforesterie. Ce temps de chantier a été l’occasion de comprendre comment fonctionne un écosystème nourricier : choix des essences adaptées au sol et au climat du Limousin, réflexion sur les associations végétales, lecture des sols, gestion de l’eau et compréhension des cycles naturels.
La composition du jardin associe différentes strates végétales — arbres fruitiers, arbustes, vivaces, grimpantes — implantées de manière à favoriser les complémentarités et à garantir la résilience du système.
Ce projet s’inscrit pleinement dans la philosophie de l’Atelier du Limousin : apprendre par le faire, se reconnecter aux ressources locales, comprendre les dynamiques écologiques du territoire, et intégrer ces savoirs dans la manière de concevoir l’architecture aujourd’hui.
